ESPN’s Matt Miller breaks down if Caleb Williams would return to USC
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Caleb Williams returning to USC in 2024 rumors live on and ESPN’s Matt Miller doesn’t really buy it. The NFL Draft expert sees Williams as the top pick in the draft by Chicago Bears instead.

Now there’s been plenty of rumors and speculation that Williams would not want to play for the Bears or the Washington Commanders. But when you boil it down to brass tax, the NFL is next for the former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback.

Miller explained on Monday’s edition of Get Up.

“I will tell you it’s something that lives a lot more online and on television than it does in NFL circles right now,” Miller said. “But it’s worth noting, Caleb has not officially hired an agent to handle his contract right now, his rookie contract. His dad is very involved in the process. So there’s not an agent right now that I can call upa and say how does Caleb feel about Chicago? You know, they have nice penthouses downtown Chicago, would you like one of those two? So there’s not that point person right now.”

As of now, it’s still a feeling out process but the expectation is Williams will go to the NFL. He already opted out of USC’s Holiday Bowl game at the end of the year to prepare.

“So it will be Caleb and his family communicating with the Chicago Bears,” Miller said. “But I know Ryan Poles is a young, very charismatic general manager. I can see how he and Caleb Williams would hit it off and sell to him. You can bring football back to Chicago. We haven’t been good here in a long time. You could bring football back to Chicago.”

That would be the ideal situation for Williams, according to Miller. Washington, while rebuilding and getting a front office facelift, still might not be as attractive.

“We’ve already seen Ben Johnson maybe get cold feet dealing with the Washington Commanders,” Miller said. “So we can’t just pretend because Caleb’s from the suburbs of Washington D.C. that he wants to go to that organization that has also had its fair share of issues.

“Obviously new ownership, their new general manager in Adam Peters, but neither team is exactly a great situation for a young quarterback.”

So Williams has to go to a rebuilding team if he goes at the top of the draft. That’s not exactly a novel concept. But still, it remains to be seen what Williams will officially do in the next couple of months.
